Culturally Relevant Pedagogy
The use of culturally relevant pedagogy has shown several benefits, specially to underrepresented minority students. This is because it allows students to recognize and honor their own culture while acquiring knowledge of other cultures. It also increase students' sense of belongness, empathy, and interpersonal skills.
By combining this knowledge with Professor Prado's passion in learning about different kinds of cultures, Professor Prado has developed some assignments that use culturally relevant pedagogy in her classes.
One assignment consisted of inviting Native American chefs Vincent Medina and Louis Trevino from
mak-'amham/Cafe Ohlone to talk about Ohlone traditional food to chemical engineering students enrolled in Professor's Prado food engineering course. Students had to complete an assignment that was based on the chefs' talk.
